From Tropical Sun to Alpine Snow:
My Alpe d'Huez Debut

Growing up in coastal South India, snowfall was a distant cinematic dream. Fast-forward: I moved to France, and my very first mountain adventure was Alpe d'Huez โ€” sitting right in the backyard of my new home, Grenoble.

The destination

Situated just 90 minutes (59km) from Grenoble, Alpe d'Huez is a year-round resort perched at 1,869m above sea level in the heart of the Oisans region. In summer it's an internationally renowned cycling venue โ€” a bucket-list climb for many. In winter, it transforms into one of France's premier skiing destinations. It's so legendary it became the site of the very first Tomorrowland Winter festival.

The views don't just take your breath away โ€” they leave you completely awestruck. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, filled with the infectious energy of enthusiastic people ranging from tiny toddlers on skis to the "age is just a number" crowd, the atmosphere is unlike anything else.

๐ŸŠ The outdoor heated swimming pool

This is one of THE BEST EXPERIENCES and a genuinely one-of-a-kind adventure. There is nothing quite like drifting in a steaming outdoor pool while delicate snowflakes melt against your skin and towering blankets of snow frame the water's edge. Pure alpine magic.

Swimming in the heated outdoor pool during snowfall The heated pool at dusk surrounded by snow
  • This is a must-do in peak winter โ€” carry your swimwear even if you think you won't need it
  • The pool is heated year-round but the contrast of warm water and snowfall in winter makes it unforgettable
  • Official pool information โ†—

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Lac Besson

A picturesque alpine lake in the Huez region, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. In summer it's ideal for hiking, picnicking and swimming. In winter, it's completely covered in snow โ€” a true winter wonderland. You can hike up or ski your way there. Either way, the journey is as breathtaking as the destination.

๐ŸงŠ La Grotte de Glace โ€” Ice Cave

An extraordinary ice cave featuring tunnels and artistic sculptures carved from glacial ice. Located at the Pic Blanc point, accessible via pedestrian lift passes. A magical, otherworldly experience unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.

Ice Cave tickets

  • Adults: โ‚ฌ6.50
  • Children (5โ€“12 years): โ‚ฌ5.50
  • Free for children under 5
  • Buy tickets at the counter on-site

๐Ÿจ Where I stayed โ€” Le Castillan

A chalet-style 3-star hotel with ski-to-door access. The wellness centre in the basement โ€” with sauna, hammam and fitness room โ€” is genuinely exceptional. I'd book it again just for the evenings spent there unwinding after a long day on the slopes.

  • Book directly via their official website for best rates โ€” link below. You can also check availability on Booking.com โ†— to compare options
  • Do NOT miss the FREE sauna and hammam in the basement. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was one of the highlights of the entire trip
  • From WiFi to room heater to double closets and a locker โ€” they have thought of everything
  • Massage treatments are available at a supplement

๐Ÿœ Where to eat

There's a wide range of restaurants in Alpe d'Huez for all budgets. There's also an Intermarchรฉ at Les Bergers if you want to save money and not eat out every meal โ€” a wise move given resort prices.

๐Ÿ’ก Practical tips

  • Buy your ski card at the station โ€” it lets you take ski lifts and access various slopes. The same card works for the roller coaster too (seasonal)
  • If it's your first time skiing, rent gear in Grenoble โ€” it's significantly cheaper than renting at the resort
  • Alpe d'Huez is 90 minutes (59km) from Grenoble โ€” plan your travel in advance
  • The resort is genuinely year-round โ€” cycling and hiking in summer, skiing in winter, swimming year-round
  • Planning guided ski lessons or a mountain activity? GetYourGuide โ†— has a solid selection of experiences in Alpe d'Huez worth browsing

Uriage: A Spa Town in France

My definition of relaxation has evolved a lot over the years. These days, it's about wandering through uncharted trails, hiking to tranquillity, and restful pursuits that soothe the soul. This quest for calm is what led me to the enchanting beauty of Uriage.

About Uriage-les-Bains

Located just 15 minutes from Grenoble, this remarkable spa town has roots stretching back to the Roman Empire. Romans built baths here to benefit from the anti-rheumatic properties of the spring water โ€” and that therapeutic tradition lives on today. Uriage thermal water contains sulphide and salt, and due to its exceptional composition and natural isotonicity, it's used to treat conditions in rheumatology, dermatology, ENT and respiratory health.

โ™จ๏ธ Spa Thermal d'Uriage

The centrepiece of the town โ€” a beautiful thermal centre offering everything from therapeutic treatments to relaxation packages. The indoor pool, hammam, solarium and tea room all come with the Relaxation Pass.

The Best Zero-Euro Afternoon
in Grenoble

A lazy afternoon stroll turned into a 17th-century hilltop escape. Nestled in a former convent building, this alpine museum surprised me completely โ€” and became one of my favourite discoveries since moving to Grenoble.

What is Musรฉe Dauphinois?

Set in a 17th-century convent building perched above the city, the Musรฉe Dauphinois exhibits regional Alpine heritage from past and present. Its permanent collections include "The People of the Alps" โ€” a fascinating presentation of 19th-century rural mountain life โ€” and the Grand History of Skiing. Temporary installations rotate every 6โ€“12 months.

Inside you'll also find a restored Baroque chapel that serves as a cultural and artistic space, audio/video rooms bringing history to life through storytelling, and a reading corner with children's books. The museum is also fully accessible for people with reduced mobility.

๐ŸŒฟ The gardens โ€” don't skip these

The museum's gardens are genuinely extraordinary. On a clear sunny day, the views across Grenoble with the snow-capped Alps as a backdrop are some of the best in the city. Sit on one of the many benches and just breathe it in. This alone is worth the climb.

๐Ÿšถ Getting there โ€” 4 ways

  • The scenic route: Cross the Saint-Laurent footbridge and take the Montรฉe de Chalemont. A steep pebble path that rewards you with river views before you even reach the museum gates. Map โ†—
  • The easy route: Tram B to the "Notre-Dame Musรฉe" stop โ€” saves your energy for exploring the exhibits rather than climbing the hill
  • The local way: Bus 40 or a local line โ€” the true Grenoblois way to navigate the city
  • The wildcard: If you're already up at the Bastille, walk downhill โ€” the path leads directly to the museum's secret garden entrance

๐Ÿ’ก Essential tips

Good to know before you go

  • Entry is completely free โ€” always
  • Use Google Maps or the L'Appli M app for tram/bus routes and timings
  • Wear comfortable shoes โ€” the path up is steep
  • Bring water โ€” mountain views are better when you're not thirsty
  • Check opening times and weather before visiting
Check current opening times โ†—

Visiting Grenoble for the first time? Booking.com โ†— and Hostelworld โ†— both have great options close to the city centre โ€” the museum is easily walkable from most central stays. And if you want to explore Grenoble with a local guide, GetYourGuide โ†— has walking tours that pair well with a museum visit.

A personal note

Chasing the future in the present, we often forget to slow down and appreciate the past. One afternoon, not long after relocating to Grenoble from another continent, I stepped out for a walk with no particular destination in mind. This tucked-away treasure found me instead. I climbed the stairs, stopped midway to breathe in a panoramic view, and continued up guided by distant church bells echoing through the city. By the time I reached the museum, the city had faded away and something quieter had taken its place.

The unexpected always tends to surprise us in the best way.
