Growing up in coastal South India, snowfall was a distant cinematic dream. Fast-forward: I moved to France, and my very first mountain adventure was Alpe d'Huez โ sitting right in the backyard of my new home, Grenoble.
The destination
Situated just 90 minutes (59km) from Grenoble, Alpe d'Huez is a year-round resort perched at 1,869m above sea level in the heart of the Oisans region. In summer it's an internationally renowned cycling venue โ a bucket-list climb for many. In winter, it transforms into one of France's premier skiing destinations. It's so legendary it became the site of the very first Tomorrowland Winter festival.
The views don't just take your breath away โ they leave you completely awestruck. Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, filled with the infectious energy of enthusiastic people ranging from tiny toddlers on skis to the "age is just a number" crowd, the atmosphere is unlike anything else.
๐ The outdoor heated swimming pool
This is one of THE BEST EXPERIENCES and a genuinely one-of-a-kind adventure. There is nothing quite like drifting in a steaming outdoor pool while delicate snowflakes melt against your skin and towering blankets of snow frame the water's edge. Pure alpine magic.
- This is a must-do in peak winter โ carry your swimwear even if you think you won't need it
- The pool is heated year-round but the contrast of warm water and snowfall in winter makes it unforgettable

๐๏ธ Lac Besson
A picturesque alpine lake in the Huez region, surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. In summer it's ideal for hiking, picnicking and swimming. In winter, it's completely covered in snow โ a true winter wonderland. You can hike up or ski your way there. Either way, the journey is as breathtaking as the destination.
๐ง La Grotte de Glace โ Ice Cave
An extraordinary ice cave featuring tunnels and artistic sculptures carved from glacial ice. Located at the Pic Blanc point, accessible via pedestrian lift passes. A magical, otherworldly experience unlike anything you'll find elsewhere.

๐จ Where I stayed โ Le Castillan
A chalet-style 3-star hotel with ski-to-door access. The wellness centre in the basement โ with sauna, hammam and fitness room โ is genuinely exceptional. I'd book it again just for the evenings spent there unwinding after a long day on the slopes.
- Book directly via their official website for best rates โ link below. You can also check availability on Booking.com โ to compare options
- Do NOT miss the FREE sauna and hammam in the basement. I'm not exaggerating when I say it was one of the highlights of the entire trip
- From WiFi to room heater to double closets and a locker โ they have thought of everything
- Massage treatments are available at a supplement
๐ Where to eat
There's a wide range of restaurants in Alpe d'Huez for all budgets. There's also an Intermarchรฉ at Les Bergers if you want to save money and not eat out every meal โ a wise move given resort prices.
- My personal recommendation: Baan Thai Takeaway Restaurant โ quick, tasty, great service and very reasonably priced for a ski resort
